NEWS: 6/29/09

We are only a month away from the first official practice/time trials for the 2009 XC season.  I hope everyone is finding time in their schedule to do their workouts and keep up with their running logs.   Contact me if you did not receive the email containing the summer workouts.

Any athlete who would like to be a part of the 2009 cross country team MUST run a 3K time trial at one of the following dates.

All athletes should run the 3k Time trial on Saturday, August 1st at 8am.  This is the first official practice and all athletes should be here on that date to run the time trial.

IF YOU CAN NOT ATTEND THE FIRST OFFICIAL PRACTICE due to vacation or camp you can run the time trial on one of the following dates.   Anyone planning on running the time trial on one of the following dates should let me know ahead of time.
Friday, July 24th at 8am.
Monday, July 27th at 8am

If your schedule will not allow you to run a 3k time trial on any of the above 3 dates, you need to contact me and see if we can work something out.

REMINDERS:

There has been a lot of talk over the past few months about the location of the 2009 state meet and the final decision has been made....  the state meet will be held at WakeMed Soccer Park instead of Tanglewood.    The meet will be on Nov. 7th.        Many local coaches, including myself, will be helping Coach Cooper put on the meet and we will need volunteers from our schools to help.   Course monitors is probably one of the main areas that we will need help and there is always a need for helpers in the finish line chute.    Volunteers will be either morning volunteers, afternoon volunteers, or all day volunteers.  4-A runners will be in the afternoon (if that helps you decide when you want to volunteer).
If there are any parents that are 100% sure you will volunteer for the meet, please let me know and let me know if you are willing to volunteer during the am, pm, or all day.        You do not have to be knowledgeable of the sport to volunteer!!   We can train you in the area you volunteer!    You do not have to let me know what you want to volunteer for yet .....  at this point, we just need to see how many volunteers we have committed.    The more volunteers we have, the better the meet will be!!   And I would MUCH rather drive 15mins. to wakemed to run the state meet in the future rather than drive 2.5 hrs. or more to another course, so we need to do a great job of running the meet.

1.  I will need a couple parents to organize the parents' meeting/pool party that we have every year at Springdale Pool.  This meeting needs to be held sometime between Aug. 17 - 21st and at 6pm ( if this week is possible).   If Aug. 17-21st is not available, then we would need to look at the week before.  Please email me and let me know if you can help with this.

2.  We already have a few adjustments to the meet schedule.  The Tanglewood Meet on Oct. 10th has been canceled.  I might find a meet on Oct. 10th to put in its place.    I am adding the Reebok  Wolfpack invitational on Sat., Sept. 19 at Wakefield Soccer Park.   I am trying to run as many meets at WakeMed as possible since our conference meet, regional meet, and possibly our State Meet will be held there.

3.  Summer workouts:   We have had around 25 or so runners at the first week of workouts.  It is good to see these athletes at LRHS working out, but we need more of our team here.   Please do your best to be here on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays at 8am to run with the team.    Everyone needs to make sure they are doing their workouts, including abs and arms, on a daily basis.   Please remember to keep your summer running log up to date.  It is due on Aug. 1st.

Several LRHS track athletes qualified for the Nike Outdoor National Champioship Track & Field meet that is being held today and tomorrow.  The girls 4x2 relay team competed today and broke their own school record by running 1:42.83.  The team is made up of Paige Eley, Sarah Jones, Hailey Blackburn, and Kaitlyn Quirk.       Paige Eley also competed in the 100m Emerging Elite today and finished 5th.    Paige is also competing in the 200m dash tomorrow.       This a very big honor to qualify and compete at  this national track meet.   This has capped off a very successful year for the girls track & field team.  The team finished in the top 10 in the state and set 6 new school records.

FYI....  there are still several track & field camps available this summer.   It would be a great way to learn more about your events and get tips on what you can do between now and next season.  You can find several track & field camps listed at www.ncpreptrack.com   there is a link for track & field camps.

Athletes interested in running cross country should email  Coach McLamb at mmclamb@wcpss.net or mmclamb2004@aol.com to get summer workouts.

ALL ATHLETES MUST HAVE A PHYSICAL ON FILE AT LRHS IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE!!!  If you have not already turned in a physical, please bring it to me at the summer workouts instead of turning it into the main office.      A lot of the athletes that ran track and cross country last year no longer have a valid physical.     Email me or Coach Pridgen (athletic trainer) to find out if your physical is valid.
I know a lot of you are on vacations during the summer and I understand athletes missing summer workouts for that, but please do your best to make as many summer workouts as possible.  If you are going to miss the first offical fall practice (Sat., Aug. 1st) due to vacation, please be prepared to run your 3k time trial the week before.    I will set a few dates the week before Aug. 1st for those athletes to run the 3k time trial.   Everyone should have a 3k time trial by/on Aug. 1st.

EVERY athlete trying out for cross country MUST have a training log to turn in on Aug. 1st.   This log should show how many mins/miles the athlete ran each day, each week, each month.    Any cross training should also be included.

ANY ATHLETE  THAT FAILS TO HAVE A TRAINING LOG SHOWING THEIR SUMMER WORKOUTS WILL START OFF WITH THE LOWEST LEVEL OF TRAINING AND WILL NOT RUN IN AT LEAST THE 1st MEET, IF NOT MORE MEETS.       I can only assume that little or no running occured if you do not have a training log to turn in.

Please pass this information along to anyone you know that might want to come out for cross country.

Here is the Guide for Off Campus Running.

Here is a list of rules and expectations for LRHS Cross Country runners.

Upcoming Events and General Information:

If anyone knows of a student that would be interested in being a manager for the indoor and outdoor track team..>PLEASE send them to me!!!  I really need someone to take attendance each day at practice and do a few other duties.  The manager would not have to stay at practice the entire time.  I currently have 200 kids signed up for track and it will be really hard for me to keep attendance by myself if we have anywhere close to that number show up.   I do not expect that many to actually show up....but 120 or so will still be a lot!

EMAILS....   please do not think I am ignoring you if I do not respond to your emails.   Unless you ask me a specific question I will probably not respond.   I do read the emails and pay attention to them.... but I typically do not respond due to the LARGE number of emails I get each day.   Please continue to send me the emails... I like being informed about issues, but just do not be bothered by the fact that I might not be able to respond to them all.

Please read the general info. about tryouts.

Athletic Participation Form
Here is the NEW form that MUST be filled out completely/signed before any athlete can travel or compete with the team.

Everyone on the team should work as hard as the coaches at recruiting good, hard working athletes that will help bring our team to the next level.   We have the athletes in our school to be very successful....   we just need them out there and we need to have a strong work ethic!

PLEASE do your part in recruiting new athletes that can make our program stronger.  Please forward any emails and this web site address with upcoming 8th graders (or their parents) that you think might be interested in running OR anyone that is already at LRHS that you think might be interested!!!
