K-5 Literacy & Math Intervention Programs

Title I and Local Literacy

What is a Literacy Intervention Program?

Title I is a Literacy & Math intervention program offered for grades K-5. The program provides supplemental reading and or math instruction to small groups of identified students. Literacy & Math Teachers use a structured lesson format. The books used are primarily nonfiction. The lessons are designed to meet the specific needs of the students. Literacy Lesson components include: Word Work, Interactive Writing, Shared or Guided Reading, and Fluency. Math Lesson components include: Concept Development with Manipulatives, Skill Building/Vocabulary Development, & Extended Response/Application. The lessons are designed to meet the specific needs of the students. This allows the teacher to tailor the lessons to meet the needs of individual students.

When do the students receive supplemental instruction?

The students that are eligible for our Literacy Intervention Program receive supplemental reading services five days a week during the regular school day from our two full-time Title 1 teachers. Our Local Literacy teacher teaches reading three days a week and serves as our school's Literacy Coach. Her lessons are thirty minutes each. Our Math Intervention teacher works with small groups two days a week for thirty-five minutes each and serves as our school's Math Coach.

What are the benefits?

•  Struggling readers & math students benefit from the structure and routine of the intervention lesson.

•  Progress in reading can be accelerated when clear, direct instruction is based on ongoing assessment.

•  Frequent collaboration with both the regular classroom teacher and the parent or guardian ensures maximum growth for each child.

Parent Education Opportunities!

The Title I team has four Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) meetings per year. The meetings take place in the evenings and child care is provided. For two of our meetings, dinner for the families is provided as well! Parents can learn about techniques to help their students improve their reading, writing, and math skills. Families are encouraged to check out Leap Pad Learning Centers and Literacy Kits to use as learning resources with their child at home. As our math program launches this fall, we hope to add some math manipulatives and games to our learning resources as well! Dates/Topics for upcoming PAC meetings are as follows: Oct. 14th at 6:30 PM (Media Center)- General Meeting with Leap Pad & Literacy Kit Distribution, *Dec. 9th at 6:00 PM (Cafeteria) - "How Can I Help My Child Read/Comprehend?," *Feb.10th at 6:00PM (Cafeteria) -"How Can I Help My Child Write?," May 5th at 6:00 PM "Summer Reading Ideas/LeapPad & Literacy Kit Return." Math topics will be added as the program at York further unfolds!

*Dinner will be provided by Chick-fil-A at the Dec. meeting & Pizza Hut at the Feb. meeting.

Tutoring

Title 1 provides tutoring two days a week through the York Encouraging Student Success (YESS) program. Students in grades 3-5 who are eligible for Title 1 will be invited to attend. Small group reading and math instruction is provided by Highly Qualified York Staff members. Students also receive individualized instruction through Prescriptive Learning & Study Island computerized instruction. Using assigned student logins, these programs can be used to brush up on reading and math skills from home! Transportation is provided. We are hoping to have this program available by November. Details will follow soon!
