K-5 Literacy & Math Intervention Programs

Title I and Local Literacy

What is a Literacy Intervention Program?

Title I is a Literacy & Math intervention program offered for grades K-5. The program provides supplemental reading and or math instruction to small groups of identified students. Literacy & Math Teachers use a structured lesson format. The books used for literacy instruction are primarily nonfiction. The lessons are designed to meet the specific needs of the students. Literacy Lesson components include: Word Work, Interactive Writing, Shared or Guided Reading, and Fluency. Math Lesson components include: Concept Development with Manipulatives, Skill Building/Vocabulary Development, & Extended Response/Application. The lessons are designed to meet the specific needs of the students.

When do the students receive supplemental instruction?

The students that are eligible for York's Title 1 Literacy Intervention Program receive supplemental reading services five days a week/thirty minutes per day in addition to their classroom reading instruction during the regular school day. Amy Armstrong, Dawn Ward, and Dana Zeszotarski are our Title 1 Reading Teachers.

Our K-2 Local Literacy Coach/Math Intervention Teacher, Sherry Gupton, provides reading instruction three days a week for 30 minutes to small groups of reading students. She works with K-2 math students twice a week for thirty-five minutes to provide math remediation.

Our school is in the process of hiring a 3-5 Math Intervention teacher. We hope to have someone in place by mid-October!

What are the benefits?

•  Struggling readers & math students benefit from the structure and routine of the intervention lesson.

•  Progress in reading and math can be accelerated when clear, direct instruction is based on ongoing assessment.

•  Frequent collaboration with both the regular classroom teacher and the parent or guardian ensures maximum growth for each child.

Parent Education Opportunities!

The Title I team has four Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) meetings per year. The meetings take place in the evenings and child care is provided.
