Imagination and Beyond

Developing Curriculum for York's Academically Gifted Child

INTRODUCTION: Gifted and talented children learn rapidly and easily, therefore requiring a different level of service from the norm. They are able to apply analytical and evaluative reasoning, gain knowledge quickly, recognize relationships, comprehend ambiguous meanings and in general, are cognizant of many things about which other children remain unaware. Therefore, the units developed in "Imagination and Beyond" with its many facets provides a vehicle addressing AG children's special needs without infringing on regular classroom curriculum.

Objectives for each unit include:

  1. Providing opportunities to utilize higher level thought processes (divergent and critical thinking),
  2. Providing multiple opportunities to successfully apply creativity,
  3. Promoting and assisting the learner to demonstrate self-motivation and discipline,
  4. Helping to identify individual interests and providing blocks of time to pursue it,
  5. Reducing teacher-talk lectures and increasing learning through interaction and research,
  6. Encouraging the use of hidden/under-developed talent in successful tasks,
  7. Promoting student evaluation by means of student products and activities,
  8. Developing insightful learning in order to help children make intelligent choices.
